Why did you sign up to do this 5K?
Fundraiser for my son’s school. The type of run — glow in the dark — is right up my son’s alley. Then, it really hit me that I need to do healthy things with my son as a role model. It wasn’t just about him being dropped off, but us together doing it.
How did you feel once you crossed the finish line?
Amazing. Tired. Didn’t think I was going to finish. But my son’s smile and him waiting in the wings made it worth it! Tears of joy for completing my first one.
What would you say was the hardest challenge in this race?
The last mile, especially since my son crossed the finish line 20min before me. I didn’t “train” so I walked it, but that last mile… motivation went down.
What was the most rewarding thing about completing this run?
My son’s hugs at the end. We did it, together. Well, sort of — the school was being helped with the fundraiser. The best theme and premium shirts came in second as most rewarding.
If you have any words of encouragement for new runners, please share!
Internal motivation goes a long way but seeing your children be proud of you is worth more than any trophy. Couch to 5k is good training but even if you don’t complete it, don’t let it stop you walking it.
